The 5 Questions Every CFO Should Answer in Under 60 Seconds

The moment I know an AI finance tool is actually working is when a CFO answers a hard question in a board meeting without having prepared for it. Not because they guessed well. Because the answer was simply available, on demand.

There are about five questions that separate a CFO who has a real-time intelligence layer from one who is still waiting on a report. They aren’t exotic. They’re the questions every board, audit committee, and CEO already asks. What changes is how long the answer takes: sixty seconds, or three days and two analysts.

The problem was never the data

For most finance teams, the data already exists. It sits in a cloud data warehouse, fed by pipelines someone has to maintain and patch, queried through legacy BI tools that produce reports after the fact. That stack answers “what happened.” It does not reason. It can’t tell you why the number moved, what it implies, or what to do next. It’s post-facto reporting, not intelligence.

Two of our customers, a national university and a consumer-services company, described the same before-state almost word for word: a warehouse, brittle pipelines, and dashboards that reported the past without ever interpreting it.

That’s the gap SmartResearch closes. Think of it as the layer between your system of record (the ERP) and your systems of action (the agents that run AP and AR): a system of intelligence that reads across both legs of the cash cycle, reasons over them, and returns an answer with its work shown. Every answer cites its source. Numbers read from your systems, never invented.
